George Wilson was born on 26th February 1913 in Huthwaite, Nottinghamshire (Mansfield Q2-1913 7B:232), son of Herbert Hedley and Eva Elizabeth WILSON. His father was a butcher.

From Notts Free Press- 11th January 1946:- Former Huthwaite Resident - PRESUMED KILLED IN ACTION- Reported missing at the fall of Singapore Pte. George Wilson, formerly of Huthwaite and Sutton, is now stated, in a War Office communication received by his wife, who resides at The School House, Waterbeach, Cambridge, to be presumed killed in action on February 15th, 1942. Prior to being called up Pte. Wilson was butchery manager of the Soham Co-operative Stores, Cambridge, and previously had been employed by the Stanton Hill Co-operative Society. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. H.H. Wilson (butcher), of Huthwaite. He leaves one son. | The 1st Battalion, Cambridgeshire Regiment were fighting in the Adams Park area of Singapore when the order came to lay down their arms and surrender to the Japanese. The 1st battalion lost 22 killed or missing that day, the 2nd battalion 11, the rest were to suffer years of harsh treatment in captivity, a great many dying. |
